Free the People ROC was born in the summer of 2020 in the wake of the George Floyd & Daniel Prude uprising. What began as a groundswell of outrage quickly transformed into a sustained people-powered movement. In those early days, thousands poured into the streets demanding justice—not just for Daniel Prude, but for all those harmed by police violence and systemic neglect. FTP emerged from that moment, built by organizers, neighbors, artists, teachers, and community members who refused to return to ignore the injustices we'd been dealt. We formed not as a single-issue campaign, but as a growing abolitionist collective committed to reimagining safety, care, and justice in our city.
FTP is a community-led, grassroots collective rooted in abolitionist values. We are organized into working committees that guide different areas of our work—from political education and mutual aid, to policy advocacy and coalition building. Our decisions are made collectively, guided by the voices and needs of the people most impacted by harm and injustice. We operate without hierarchical leadership, centering shared responsibility, deep trust, and accountability to one another and to our community.
We are a Black-led, Palestinian-led, femme-led, queer-led organization. Our steering committee consists of five Rochester-based organizers committed to community development and liberation of all people. We are guided by principles of international solidarity with all liberation movements, anti-capitalism, anti-imperialism, environmental justice, pro-worker values, mutual aid, pro-queer advocacy, abolition, and a revolutionary spirit that drives us forward.
